The C4 Corvette's dash design underwent significant changes over its production run from 1984 to 1996. The first major update occurred in 1990, with the introduction of the "revised" dash. This update brought a more modern and ergonomic design to the Corvette's interior.

The 1990 revised dash featured a new instrument cluster with a more prominent center console and a redesigned steering column. The cluster itself was also updated with a new gauge layout.

The 1991 Corvette saw further refinements to the dash design, including a new trim piece and a revised center console. These changes helped to create a more cohesive and premium feel in the Corvette's interior.

One notable aspect of the C4 Corvette's dash design is its use of analog gauges, which were a hallmark of the Corvette's interior for many years.

The 1990-1993 dash panels had a glove box on the passenger side, but this changed with the introduction of the passenger side air bag in 1994. The air bag took the place of the glove box.

The dash frame "skeleton" remained the same from 1990 to 1996, despite changes to the dash pad and trim pieces. This means that some items from the 1990-1993 dashes can fit the 1994-1996 versions, but not all of them.

1990-1993 Design

The 1990-1993 design of the C4 Corvette dash is a significant departure from the earlier years. This design overhaul started in 1990 with the introduction of a more rounded and modern dash.

The 1990 design featured a glove box on the passenger side, which was a notable change from earlier models. This design element was a part of the dash redesign that year.

One of the notable trim differences between 1990-1991 and 1992-1993 models is worth mentioning. The overall dash frame and top pad structure remained the same for both periods, however.

The 1994-1996 dash design is a minor update from the 1990-1993 versions.

Most notably, the passenger side air bag takes the place of the glove box in the 1990-1993 designs.

The shaping around the A/C controls and radio was redesigned to allow better visibility from the passenger seat.

Some items from the 1990-1993 dashes will fit the 1994-1996 versions, but others won't.

The Dash Frame "Skeleton" remains the same for 1990-1996, despite differences in the dash pad and trim pieces.

Top Pad and Trim

The top pad and trim on your C4 dash can be a bit tricky, but understanding the design and common issues can make a big difference. The top dash pad used a common design from 1984-1989, which is very prone to cracking due to sun exposure.

These early dash tops have two cloth sections at the outer edges that appear as speaker grills, but if your car has the Bose stereo option, the dash top speaker area is just a fake covering with no hole. Non-Bose cars would have dash mounted speakers in this area, and the underside of the dash pad would have a grill piece cut for these speakers.

The dash top pad of the later style C4 Corvettes, from 1990-1996, carried two designs, with the major visual difference being the addition of the passenger side airbag in 1994. The 1990-1993 dash top pads are a much larger piece that wraps completely around the top and bottom of the passenger side of the dash.

The 1994-1996 dash tops are different from the 90-93 versions as they are only a dash top pad, not wrapping around to include the lower part of the dash on the passenger side. This makes them an easier part to remove from the dash, and less expensive to have a replacement shipped.

Top Pad

The top pad is a crucial part of your Corvette's interior, but it's also prone to cracking and damage over time.

The top dash pad used in Corvettes from 1984-1989 was particularly susceptible to cracking due to sun exposure, which made it brittle.

The 1990-1993 dash top pads are a much larger piece that wraps completely around the top and bottom of the passenger side of the dash, making them a little more difficult to remove and more expensive to ship.

The 1994-1996 dash tops are only a dash top pad and do not wrap around to include the lower part of the dash on the passenger side, making them an easier part to remove.

Both the 90-93 and 94-96 dash top pads are prone to de-lamination of the pad material from the plastic base at the front windshield edge, which can be noticed as the front dash edge appears to be peeling upwards.

Lower Underside Trim

The lower underside trim is a crucial part of your car's interior. It's the black trim piece covering the underside of the dash from the firewall to the dash edge, and it's only visible if you bend down and look under the dash.

For 84-89 cars, this trim piece is the same on both sides, but it has a cut slot on the left side for the clutch pedal on manual transmission cars. Automatic cars have the same panel without the slot.

If you're working with an automatic panel on a manual transmission car, you can easily cut out the slot for clutch pedal arm clearance. I've seen this done before, and it's a pretty straightforward process.

The lower underside trim for 90-96 cars is a bit different. Instead of just covering the underside of the dash, it extends up to the firewall to provide a cover for the whole area. This is true for most of these cars, but there's an exception.

For 90-93 cars, the passenger side has an additional trim piece that covers the lower dash from the carpeted dash end to the firewall. This piece has mounting tabs underneath the right side fuse panel bezel that are prone to cracking if you forget to remove the bolts when taking off the panel.

Lower Pads

The lower pads, also known as knee bolsters or hush pads, are a common area of damage on the drivers side.

For 90-93 models, the lower dash pads on the drivers side were a carpeted piece matching the interior color, with an option for a lower center dash vent.

These pads had a longer lower black plastic piece that led to a mounting point at the firewall above the brake pedal, which is different from the 94-96 versions.

The 90-93 versions had a slot for the clutch pedal arm on manual transmission cars, but this is not necessary to find a specific type of pad when replacing it.

In fact, the automatic versions of the 90-93 pads have an etched line in the plastic for where to trim if installing on a manual transmission car.

The 94-96 versions, on the other hand, have a shorter lower plastic piece and no difference between automatic and manual versions.

These two versions could be used interchangeably, but they have different carpet loop patterns that won't match the rest of the interior carpet.

Damage to the carpet on the top outside edge is a common issue with these lower pads, particularly where the drivers knees and feet can contact when entering and exiting the car.

The passenger side lower dash pad is built into the dash top frame for 90-93 models, but it's a removable piece on 94-96 models.

These 94-96 versions are color matched to the interior of the car and have several mounting tabs located under the passenger side dash vent and under the right side fuse panel bezel.

Cracked tabs can be a problem, and if too many become cracked, the panel won't stay installed correctly.

Gauge Cluster and Trim

The gauge cluster and trim on your C4 dash can be a bit tricky to navigate, but don't worry, I've got you covered.

The gauge cluster bezels for 1984-1989 Corvettes may look identical, but they have a slight design difference between 84-85 and 86-89 models. The 84-85 bezel has a thin face design, while the 86-89 bezel is thicker at the bottom of the instrument cluster openings. These two designs can be used interchangeably.

If you're looking to replace your gauge cluster bezel, you'll need to remove the headlight switch knob, which is easily done by depressing the underside tab inside the back of the knob with a right angle pick. You'll also need to be careful not to damage the rubber boot that provides air flow to the door panel defrost vents.

For 1990-1996 Corvettes, the instrument gauge cluster bezels are the same for all models. This makes it a bit easier to find replacement parts or swap bezels between cars.

A fresh viewpoint: Gauge Dash

It's worth noting that the instrument clusters for 1984-1989 cars look the same when not illuminated, but there are actually many different versions of gauge clusters for each year, with visual changes in the gauge displays and differences in whether the car had cruise control or not. If you swap a cluster to your car from one that did not have cruise control, you will no longer have working cruise control.

The 84-89 clusters also have a mechanical odometer, which can be easily changed among clusters for keeping your existing mileage shown. However, this also means that people can easily change an odometer to have a car show less miles than it really has.
